A ring of raised calligraphic characters encircles the design. Such portrait badges— xiangzhang —were ubiquitous personal emblems during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966–1976). Distributed to workers and students (notably the Red Guards), these badges were worn on the chest, traded, and displayed as proofs of loyalty.
