We recently acquired some nice fossils from the late Joseph Butterfield Collection (NJ). We will be auctioning these fossils here over the next few weeks. This is a very displayable Silurian cystoid. It is a large example of Caryocrinites ornatus from the Rochester Shale of New York. This type of primitive echinoderm has a somewhat ovate cup and many uniserial arms. MANY of the thin arms are intact and preserved in a splayed "starburst" position. A distinct stem is still present and easily seen. The striking fossil is quite inflated and is well centered on the large plate of shale. This is a very impressive display specimen of Caryocrinites from the Silurian of New York.
