Check the listing for details. Inuit; King Island, Alaska, Shaman's Maskette (late 19th). Listed at 1285.00 USD. This is a beautiful and old Inuit Shaman's Maskette from King Island, Alaska. This is one of the last of its authentic kind from the late 19th to early 20th century. This Maskette possesses much surface patina. This rare and important object would've hung in the Shaman's dwelling to ward off evil spirits. It's a large sized Maskette -- it also could've been worn on the face and used in some bygone Shamanic rituals. Animal fat (Seal /Walrus fat) would've been used to give it a surface sheen as well as trade red paint. This mask has remnants of hardend animal glue around its mouth and brow ridges (it would've had animal fur for mustache, a beard and eyebrows -- lost a long time ago). The wood is probably Pine wood or some species that's native to the Southern Alaskan coast line. This mask was manufactured out of driftwood. There are no trees on King Island, Alaska -- examine the grain of wood. A very beautiful and powerful specimen. Priced to sell. Measurements: Length is 9 inches. Width approximately 5 inches.
