This badge was first approved on 17 December 1916 as a special badge for the Austro-Hungarian troops. Then on February 1, 1917, it was approved for some German troops. This badge was allowed to be worn by certain soldiers who had participated for two months in the Carpathian Mountains. The pictures shows the front and back.
