I've used this united when showing 16mm films as it enhances the mono sound track and divides the frequencies into 6 channels - mimicking 5.1 Stereo sound. No more mono soundtracks with this unit. It has adjustment controls to dial in the simulated 5.1 per the taste of the listener. It works very well, I just don't use it much anymore. I have a PDF file of the owners manual.
