The pill/oil box comes apart in 3 sections and closes very tightly. There is the original cotton fluff on the inside of each section. The leather case is in excellent condition with no damage. This round box was most likely used for religious ceremonies. They originally held holy oil which was used to anoint in baptism, and last rights given by the priests. The letters here are in Latin as follows: OS - Oleum Sanctum (Holy Oil) OI - Oleum Infirmum (oil for anointing) & SC - Sancta Chrism (used for baptizing). The oils were "stacked" for easy manipulation by the priest, but this will also make an amazing 3 tiered modern day pill box. The pill/oil box measures approx. 2" H x 1" W. I have no idea what the monogrammed initials are...can anyone let me know? I also do not know how old this box is, but I would guess it was manufactured in the late 1800's. In answer to your question concerning the initials on the top of this item, IHS is a Christogram, an abbreviation of the name of Jesus Christ. In Greek, I H S—iota eta sigma—are the first three letters in the name "Jesus" so it is a symbol for Jesus' name.The hallmark on the bottom (the letters SF with the arrow through them is the hallmark for Swift & Fisher, a New England silversmith that was in business at the turn of the last century (late 1800's to early 1900's).
