The cover of this journal is embossed with the 'Oroborus' - the mystical symbol of the world serpent that devours its own tail. The Oroborus has a long history in Western occultism, and was used by Gnostics, Hermeticists, and Alchemists. In more recent times the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche used the Oroborus as the symbol of his vision of the 'Eternal Recurrence'. I think of this journal as a book-of-shadows, a book of spells or a 'grimoire' in the Pagan Wicca tradition. The cover is handmade from vintage buffalo hide and is coloured mahogany brown, with a natural dye that is derived from tree bark. The cover is supplied with an insert book that is a standard A4/US Letter size, so you can re-use the cover with a new refill book when the original is full - you could also use it with a standard A4 printed diary or year planner etc. For the insert book you can choose from the following options: 1) unlined handmade cotton paper (50 pages/100 sides) 2) unlined cartridge drawing paper (50 pages/100 sides) 3) lined milled paper This version of the cover is finished in an organic wash of Mahogany Brown. Size: A4 (30x21cm or approx 12x8.5 inches) This is a versatile book. You could use it as a grimoire, book-of-shadows, or personal diary. You can also re-use it year after year with a current A4 printed diary. The leather of the cover will acquire a beautiful patina with age. I love working with leather, but for ethical reasons I only use vintage leather for my books- ie leather from working animals that have come to the end of their lives.
