"Madman" Yates took u-control scale by storm at the 1948 National meet when his Sammy Mason PT-17 model did the entire stunt pattern and won! Stunt fliers immediately wondered what other scale models might do well in stunt. The history behind Sammy Mason's Wasp 450 horsepower, radial-engine powered Stearman World War II basic flight school trainer is a microcosm of air shows following the war. Pop had flight instructors in his Army Aviation training in 1960 who were friends of Sammy and I have a copy of his famous book on aerobatics. The fact that he had upped the horsepower from the 220 originally used in the stable old trainer to the big Wasp made his plane far superior in aerobatic work. J.C. Yates designed numerous early u-control stunt models in the 1940s. I also sell copies of the plans for his famous THE MADMAN and THE DRAGON to consider for a future build. My last 2 pictures are of his original model airplane. This scale PT-17 Sammy Mason "Checkers" stunt model appeared in the April, 1950, Air Trails, so it is definitely eligible for Old Time Stunt. The original Sammy Mason scale color scheme is orange and white checks. These PLANS are original as I got them from Air Trails. The wingspan on this model is 38" and the original was powered by an ignition Orwick .64. A Fox .35 would be the equivalent power today.
