Material is a heavy metal , probably iron finished in a deep gold tone . Olaf Popof Mueller was an American artist born in New York who studied in France in 1905 and did freelance work for a number of European Glass makers such as Stevens and Williams and Loetz . These candlesticks have been employed in a few different uses . Candlesticks , bases for compotes and other bowls , transformed into oil lamps and as electric lamps . Whether a male or a young female they are beautifully evocative examples of the Art Deco period . The figure sports long flowing hair and is wrapped at the waist in a flowing draping to classic effect . Barefoot , he stands on a very Deco base and holds on his head a vessel which becomes the actual candle sconce . Great pieces , and pure classic Deco .
