Dagger Richard Lionheart Dagger Richard Lionheart Richard I of England known as Richard the Lionheart was king of England between 1189 and 1199, the third son of King Henry II of England and Leonor of Aquitaine. He took part in the Third Crusade, with campaigns in Sicily and Cyprus on the way and subsequently spent a period arrested by Leopold V, Duke of Austria. From an early age he appeared to have outstanding political and military skills and became notorious for his bravery and willingness to combat, waging tough campaigns to control the rebellions of the nobles in his own territory. The traditional image of Richard the Heart of Leon, the second Plantagenet king of England, has been preserved over the centuries in a romantic version, as a glorious crusader and wandering knight, captured by the Emperor of Austria upon his return from holy land and rescued by the young troubadour Blondel who discovered them when a well-known ballad sang. Richard received the title of Lionheart at the beginning of the third crusade, being compared to Philip of France as a lamb and Richard as a Lion. He convinced his officers in Winchester around the Round Table to belong to the legend of King Arthur and to possess the magical sword «Excalibur». Richard was a generous gentleman and a shrewd politician, but above all, a great soldier. His own personal skill in battle was an inspiration to his men.
