Chassis Systems - AND ON THE BACK: GalileoTraxxar! On May 10, 1999, the Dayton Business Journal published the following:"At Delphi Technical Center in Kettering, the concept of controlled braking is the critical mission. DTC is one of many technical centers where engineers research and design technologically advanced products for Delphi Automotive Systems. "We focus on how to make vehicles fundamentally safer for the driver to operate," says Scott Bailey, director of engineering for Delphi Chassis Systems, which houses the technical center in Kettering. A Delphi Technical Center in Vandalia concentrates on air constraints. "The technical centers in Dayton are just a portion of Delphi's global engineering network." For years, as part of the General Motors Corp., Delphi Automotive Systems served as a key part of the Dayton community. Today, as an independent company, Delphi is still vital to the region's economy, employing about 15,000 workers. Overall, though, Delphi's presence is felt worldwide. The firm -- based in Troy, Mich. -- manufactures components and systems for the top 25 automakers around the globe. Thousands of Delphi engineers and technicians continue to design and produce innovative automotive systems that give the firm an edge over its competitors. Using the minds and resources of engineers from several Delphi divisions, the technical center in Kettering has enhanced drivers' abilities to safely control their automobiles. "For years, most cars were controlled by hydraulic braking," Bailey says. "That method did not offer the control we have in today's cars." The first control improvement from the Kettering center's experts was the creation of the Anti-lock Braking System, or ABS. This product allows drivers to brake and steer under control. Traction control, which permits drivers to corner and steer under control, followed. Delphi's latest technological vehicle control marvel is Traxxar, which helps drivers corner and steer under control. "It monitors the driver's intended direction for the vehicle and keeps the car in control," Bailey says about Traxxar. "Of course, none of our advancements can defy the law of physics. These products make vehicles safer, but that does not mean you can travel at any speed you like." While Delphi has further enhanced its product capabilities, the company has also refined its design and production techniques, Bailey believes. Before there was Delphi Chassis Systems, Delco Products specialized in suspensions and suspension-related components and Delco Moraine focused on brakes. These two divisions merged and became Delphi Chassis in the early 1990s when the company decided to manufacture a corner module which included the brake and suspension components in one form. Delphi still makes individual components for customers. Many of the world's top automakers served by Delphi -- including GM, Mercedes, Toyota, BMW, Chrysler, Ford and Mitsubishi -- prefer modules. In fact, modular design is an integral part of Delphi's business. For example, dry interface brake corners developed at the Kettering technical center store brake fluid and house motor-based actuators, thus eliminating bulky hydraulic brake system connections and components. The units also integrate the wheel bearing, speed sensor and steering knuckle, and offer enough design flexibility to add a strut to provide a complete brake and suspension module. The corners, which is the latest member of Delphi's Galileo family of intelligent brake control systems, are designed to work with disc and/or drum brake configurations. They can be easily applied to vehicles during assembly, Bailey says. "Modular design allows us to engineer more effective, fewer and more reliable parts and send them to customers in the form they prefer," Bailey explains. "Since customers receive already assembled forms, they can bolt the modules into the vehicles without having to take all the individual components and put them together themselves." Spend a day at DTC in Kettering and you will find engineers and technicians from many of the company's divisions. This pooling of minds and resources, Bailey claims, improves efficiency. "When a team of engineers are at one technical center focusing on a complete system, it results in greater efficiency," Bailey says. "You can design a brake system and an engine mount that each works well alone, but together they do not perform ideally. Systems level engineering better allows us to develop an efficient complete package." The latest innovation from members of the Kettering technical center is a roll control product that minimizes the lean of vehicles when they turn. Delphi recently introduced the advancement on Land Rover Discovery vehicles at an auto show in Paris. "Most automobiles consisted of mechanical systems, and now they are being transformed into electronically controlled systems," Bailey says. "Delphi is responsible for many of the technological advancements in automotive systems, and the technical center is an important player on a talented team."" A LOT HAS CHANGED SINCE 1999, and a lot of sadness, and anxiety-ridden days lied ahead for Delphi and Ohio, through the filing of Chapter 11, and the resulting changes from coming out of Chapter 11 and the new Delphi that has no operations in Dayton. BUT, there are still engineers (no longer Delphi) in Kettering who remember the Delphi days of Galileo Traxxar!! So, if you are one of those and want to add a hat to your collection, now is the chance! Passing on to collectors of automotive hats! The condition of the hat is as described and disclosed in all the photos provided. It has not been laundered. IT is almost brand new minus the deterioration of the plastic snap back - it's cracked and broken. It does not have a price tag-obviously, a promo from work; however, it does have the manufacturers tag in it: Shumsky, and their phone number.
