When BMX moved towards hand brakes from coaster brakes in the late 1970's, handlebars were very narrow and on many bars there was not room to clamp a brake lever next to the grip. Handlebars from this time period also tended to have downtubes that were almost perpendicular to the grip area (such as Schwinn "box bars"). This created a need for this type of lever which could be clamped to handlebar downtube but still reached with your hand on the grip. Fits standard 7/8" (22.2mm) handlebars.
