Check the listing for details. DRAKE PLAN + RC CONSTRUCTION ARTICLE for 35" Span 1/2A Amphibian Model Airplane. Condition: New. Listed at 18.95 USD. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE I AM NOT SELLING A KIT, only a new, full-size copy of the PLAN, construction + updating article to build Willard's 35" span 1/2-A DRAKE FF. More models of THE DRAKE were built in the early 1950s than any other magazine PLAN sold back then. Pop’s most successful scratch-built free flight model was this one. He was only 15 in 1951 and he decided to tackle it by taking it to the local city reservoir and flying it as a seaplane. He put an .049 Wasp engine in it, and recalls its maiden flight - “My buddy and I couldn't afford to rent an outboard motor powered boat at the marina, so we had to rent a rowboat. But it was worth it! Those beautiful flights and the gentle water landings are still burned in my memory after 70 years.” Pop’s DRAKE was very, very easy to cut out and build. The plans show a little hinged elevator tab for the stabilizer, very useful in getting a gentle climb. The model can also be fitted for wheels as is shown in the upper picture of the construction article. As stable as this typical Ken Willard design is, putting an electric motor on the pylon and RC inside the wide fuselage is easy. My friend Gerald Baily shared the photo of how he puts electric motors on power pods. Making the fuselage waterproof shouldn’t be a problem. Cover your model's pontoons with thin sheet balsa and then covering every bit of the entire balsa model with heavily doped yellow silk span. Ken Willard's the DRAKE amphibian came out in the November 1951, and had a 35" span. In a 1982 MODEL BUILDER Ken updated the DRAKE to a full RC version iron-on covering. The name now is the DUCKLING. As a BONUS I include a copy of this article & you can update your model to RC. I AM NOT SELLING A KIT, only a nice new copy of this great old free flight amphibian PLAN. YOU ARE PURCHASING A NICE, CLEAN, WHITE, FULL-SIZE COPY OF THE ORIGINAL MAGAZINE PLAN, CONSTRUCTION ARTICLE, & BONUS DOCUMENTATION FOR AN RC VERSION, FOLDED AND IN A MANILA ENVELOPE.
