While we acquired it here in America, it could possibly have originated in England. Miraculously the delicate turned spindle railing on the top has never been broken or repaired in any way. Every inch of the top section and legs and frame retain the mellow (quite dark) patina of aged oak. The hinged top opens smoothly on hinges. The brass hinges have obviously been replaced, while the old iron lock (probably functional) is held in place with hand-forged screws. The original brass key escutcheon glows invitingly adding a nice little pop to the fairly simple piece. Every joint in the nearly black oak frame is held together by hardwood pins. We've seen so few really early desks that have survived and haven't had extensive restoration. Many that were used in schoolrooms or pulpit pieces in churches were hard used by students or congregation. This one was obviously sheltered and loved. Perhaps housed in a private pulpit or lonely sacristy somewhere? The pristine original condition simply defies explanation. The interior contains four cubicles, two of which hold tiny dove tailed drawers and the upper for accoutrement. We don't have the original key to the lock, but its mechanism looks intact, however one could easily be made by a locksmith. This piece really cries out to be situated in an early colonial home where it can be appreciated for is period style and functionality! There's plenty of room inside to hide a laptop computer! It measures 41" tall, 28-1/2" wide and 26" deep. It's really a joy to find a fully functional piece of Americana that was around before our country ceased to belong to England! The upper desk portion lifts off the frame and weighs perhaps 50 lbs., so conceivably it could be safely shipped in two containers if properly wrapped. PICK UP ONLY TOO FRAGILE TO SHIP SAFELY!
