Learn How to Build a Solar Tracker Controller with Auto East Reset Ok, so you have some actuator motors and an array frame but need a solar tracker “brain” controller. You could buy one but most do not have the automatic array return back to the East reset function so your array is ready to face the rising sun the next day. My design does. Consider building (mostly just assembly) your own, but not from scratch, but by minor modification and re-purposing a common already made relay module and a certain lighting item. You will make a frame or enclosure to mount the solar cells and the relay module circuitry, otherwise see more below. Just follow my instructions to assemble. It is not a toy: It can operate large solar arrays. Don't be mislead by the photos, as at the time I did not have a traditional solar panel array to show so I used a tiny working demo system. I have designed a very simple and reliable unit that you can replicate. All the necessary information has been put in several PDF files that are easy to follow and include pictures. You will be able to build a simple single or dual axis solar tracker controller using a certain modified relay control module(s) and some solar cells which can be purchased online usually for under $10 per axis. Add some limit switches, resistors, etc and an enclosure box, to build the basic solar tracker controller. This is a quick build. Excluding ordering parts or any paint/glue drying it is expected to not take more than an afternoon from start to operating as a basic tracker. Next add the true automatic east reset (go home at sunset) capability. This will allow the tracker to send the array to the east after sunset and therefore the array is ready and waiting for the early sunrise which in effect extends the solar energy capture hours of the day. The design uses a simple, easy to install and super cheap add-on circuit that may only take an hour to setup. The add-on circuit consists of a certain repurposed (hacked) pcb (printed circuit board) out of a common item you can purchase locally for $1-2 dollars along with a few electronic components that you may already have or can be bought in many places. This design is meant to be used on any size solar array. My technical reports will give full details for building the tracker, the auto east reset upgrade along with parts list and an electrical schematic block diagram. The descriptions will describe a single axis system, but it is understood, that you only have to build a duplicate controller for use as a second axis. In the descriptions, you would replace references of east and west with up and down as appropriate. Also, the sensor head orientation for up/down is 90 degrees offset from east/west orientation. The auto east return upgrade feature is only installed on the east/west controller. It is not needed for up/down control unless your situation only uses up/down on a single axis. I can also sell a limited quantity of certain parts or an already modified circuit board for those not wanting to deal with soldering a few SMT components. The box was over kill in size as the pcb and circuitry is actually quite small. This may possibly be the cheapest high power (10 Amp) tracker controller available on the market when you build it yourself using the information I will share with you. Quick Technical Specifications: •Single axis tracking with one unit or make two units to have dual axis tracking. •High power isolated relay outputs rated at 10A for 28/30VDC and 10A for 125/250VAC. Allows many choices of actuator motors and voltages. •12VDC nominal low power source required for the internal circuit board logic needs. If your motors are 12VDC then only one power supply is needed (as long as it can deliver enough amps) to operate both. But if your motors are 24VDC, as an example, then you will need a 12VDC and a 24VDC power source. It is Ok to share common grounds. •Leakage current. Little or no leakage or standby power robbing circuits by design. The Power On LED is the only major power leech but can be removed/disabled if desired. Note: The SunMagnet 100 Solar Tracker Controller is ideal for applications in a shade free/tree branch, shadow free area with mostly full bright Sun. Main Design Features (for Dual Axis includes Up/Down controls): •Simple operation. Has Auto/Manual, East and West controls. Also it has a Motor Enable/Disable feature for testing or experiments. •LED indicators on the circuit board to show East & West commands and Power On status. •Only one adjustment. Move the Sensor Housing to align your solar array to the sun. Tighten the wing nut. Simple. •Quick build. Excluding ordering parts or any paint/glue drying it is expected to not take more than an afternoon from start to operating. •Cost. Easy to repair, but so cheap it can be thrown away and replaced with new parts. •No software, so anyone can work on it if needed. •No microprocessor, as we don’t want the “freezes” or reboots or sensitivity to heat or the power leaching. •No op-amps to require tuning/adjusting. •No pots to adjust. •Simple effective circuitry. Draws minimum or no leaching currents especially at night. •Reliable circuit components in hot/cold environments. •No glass dome required, to avoid condensation fogging or breaking in the winter. •Rigid sensor housing for stability in moderate winds. Skills You Need for the Building Process: •Electricity/Electronics. Just basic knowledge, batteries, solar cells, continuity checks, measure voltage and amps if needed. Will need to calculate wire size for amp capacity and fuse rating as each application is unique to the actuator motor used. •Ability to read and follow the circuit schematic, wiring and block diagrams. Able to identify common SMD components on the circuit board. •Soldering. Able to solder wires or modifying the special circuit board by changing some SMD components and soldering small jumper wires. •Mechanical. Able to work with small sheet metal, drill holes in a box and install switches, painting, caulking, mounting controller to your existing solar array. •Wiring. Run small and up to 10A rated wiring. Connect by soldering, wire nuts and screws at terminal blocks. Only the circuit board(s) is special and most other items can have alternative choices often only requiring verifying that the voltage and amp ratings of components are never exceed.
