Hafez (1320-1389) is best known as a Sufi mystic who incorporated elements of Sufism into his verses. The state of God-Realisation is symbolised through union with a Beloved, and drinking the wine of spiritual love. There is much mythology but little factual information available about his life; he is known to have been a great admirer of his predecessor and fellow Shirazi Sa'di as well as Attar, Rumi and Nizami. For centuries, Persians have used the fal-e-Hafez, or the practise of divination using the poetry of this famous Sufi mystic. Written entirely in Persian, these cards will provide many hours of entertainment at parties or gatherings - as long as you don't take them too seriously or try too hard to translate them! Try them on a cold winter's night's majlis (gathering) in front of a fireplace. The believers say that when the reader turns over a randomly drawn card (or chooses a design that is most appealing at the moment), the first line that catches the reader's eye is the answer to the question of the moment. The rest of the poem can then be read for additional enlightenment or meditation on the matter. The outer box is a leatherette with a painted lid featuring a flower motif and Persian calligraphy. The inner box for the 50 cards resembles a small hardcover book. The colors of the inner and outer boxes will vary; this listing has an outer box in shades of pink and beige, and the inner box is brown. Note: The fortunes are all different, but the pictures on the backs of the cards do repeat. All sales are final. No returns or exchanges are accepted.
