NOTE: WHEN ORDERING, SPECIFY BLACK RIBBON ONLY OR BLACK/RED We are proud to announce the inclusion of Hammond Multiplex Ribbon Shields in our offerings of Hammond products, now alongside Hammond Impression Strips, which we have been creating and offering for years with much success. We believe these Ribbon Shields will continue the legacy of quality handmade products for the Hammonds to allow for continued use of these fine, unique typewriters. The original ribbon shields were stamped of tin, bent into the proper shape, with attached tin wires bent just so, to allow for the passing through of the 7/16” ribbon on the Multiplex. They came in two types: one-hole for black only and two-hole for black/red bi-chrome ribbons. One can see a drawing of the original two-hole version in this listing, designed for the bi-chrome ribbon. The typist would lift up the “Shield Frame” and rest it in the little hook on the right side, to enable the lower red part of the ribbon to engage the shuttle when struck by the hammer. The photos here also show a two-hole shield. The one-hole has only the top hole cut into the metal. Recreating the exact ribbon shields made of tin would be prohibitively expensive. Our shields are handmade of aluminum, both the shield and the attached wires. The resulting shields have almost the strength of the tin, and work the same as the tin, preventing the hammer strike from smudging the paper in the vicinity of the letter being made. In our extensive testing of these shields, we discovered that the two-hole shields designed for the bi-chrome ribbons do indeed allow for the use of red letters, but are a bit more fragile than the one-hole shields for black use only. When ordering, please specify which shield you want, black only or black/red. We recommend you purchase the black only, unless you have a specific need for red letters. We will make you the shield you wish. If your machine has a ½” ribbon, it will work, it just gets squeezed a bit going through the ribbon wires, and it doesn't flow as smoothly. If you find an issue with the ribbon binding going through the shield, which in some cases will move the shield slightly in the direction of ribbon travel, messing up the letter, you need to replace it with a 7/16" ribbon. ribbonsunlimited.com has them.
