John Lees Katana Gunto John Lees Katana Gunto This 19th century Japanese military sword is called Gunto, with a design based on French military sabers. But in order to bring the troops closer to the spirit of the samurai code of honor ( Bushido ), it was decided from 1934 onwards to bring the styling closer to the Katana. Ordinary soldiers swords were mostly made industrially and, therefore, of serviceable quality. On the other hand, the swords of high-ranking military personnel were often equipped with blades traditionally forged by master swordsmiths (while the rank of an officer could be recognized by the colors of the swords sageo ). In contrast to the Katana, the sageo was mounted on the end of the Guntos handle. This sword has a shinogi-zukuri style blade. Underneath the decorated tsuba is a traditional button with which you can pull the sword out of its scabbard. The fittings of the Gunto Katana are brown, as are the cotton handle and the varnished sword scabbard. Details: Overall length: approx. 102.5 cm. Blade length: approx. 73 cm. Length of handle: approx. 29 cm. Traditional design. Includes a collectors box. Weight: approx. 1150 g. Manufactured by John Lee.
