LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 12/08/1969 - HFSID 257118 LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI Stokowski signed this typed letter on his personalized stationery in 1969 to invite the recipient to a concert in honor of Pablo Casals... and to ask him to be a sponsor of the concert, as well. Typed letter signed "Leopold Stokowski". With pencil and black ink underlinings in unknown hand. 1 page, 8x10, on Stokowski's personalized stationery. Dec. 8, 1969. In full: "Dear Mr. Cousins, It is my pleasure to invite you to join me as one of the honorary sponsors of a concert and exhibition to be held as a tribute to Pablo Casals. The concert, which will be presented in New York on the evening of April 15 by the American Symphony Orchestra under my direction, will mark the establishment of a permanent museum collection of Casals' memorabilia and photographs and publication of Casals' forthcoming book, Joys and Sorrows. We salute Maestro Casals not only for his superlative artistry but also for his uncompromising humanism. Hence we deem it most fitting that the proceeds from the concert go to the international aid of children and to a series of free concerts given for children by the American symphony Orchestra. I am delighted to say that Maestro Casals has agreed to participate in the April 15 concert and to conduct a compo-sition of his own, a sardana based on boyhood recollections of the annual village fiesta in his homeland, Catalonia. I am asking person who are distinguished for their creative achievements and humanistic viewpoint to lend their names as honorary sponsors of the tribute to Casals. I hope not only that you will become one of these sponsors but also that, if your schedule permits, you will accept our warm invitation to attend the concert and the exhibition opening as the guest of the Founders of the American Symphony. Friendly greetings,". PABLO CASALS (1876-1973, born Pau Casals in Vendrell, Spain) achieved worldwide renown as a violoncellist, conductor and composer. Casals was born near Barcelona, Spain, and was a patriot opposed to tyranny. The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) established General Francisco Franco as total dictator of a bloody totalitarian state. Casals was so opposed to the Franco regime that he declined to appear in countries that recognized the totalitarian Spanish government, making an exception when he took part in a concert of chamber music in the White House on November 13, 1961, at the invitation of President Kennedy, whom he admired. LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI (1882-1977, born Leopold Antoni Stanislaw Boleslawawicz Stokowski in London England) conducted the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (1909-1912), Philadelphia Orchestra (1914-1936), N.Y. Symphony Orchestra (1944-1945) and Houston Symphony (1955-1962). He formed the American Symphony Orchestra in 1962. He was known for his lush interpretations of the classics and it was under his baton that the orchestra played the music for Disney's Fantasia (1940). Lightly toned and creased. Lightly nicked at top edge. Lightly discolored at top and bottom edge. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
