Marcus Élieser Bloch Marcus Élieser Bloch was a German physician and naturalist, born in 1723 in Ansbach and died on August 6, 1799 in Karlsbad. He is considered one of the leading ichthyologists of the 18th century. Coming from a very modest background, he is almost illiterate, at the age of nine he is unable to read German. His limited knowledge of Hebrew and rabbinical literature enabled him to obtain a position as tutor in the house of a Jewish surgeon in Hamburg.
