Marimo is a rare growth form of Aegagropila linnaei in which the algae grow into large green balls with a velvety appearance. The species can be found in a number of lakes and rivers in Japan and Northern Europe. Colonies of marimo balls are known to form in Japan and Iceland. Included are the glass container, 1/4" marimo moss ball, 4 colors of non-toxic gravel (black, blue, white, and tan), assortment of small sea shells, and a dried natural red sea fan. Care is simple: Rinse the contents and container once a week and replace with filtered water. It is ok if your marimo floats after this process. This is common and caused by air bubbles. To help maintain the round shape, gently swirl the container to move the marimo to a different side once a week. Filtered sun is ok, but do not place marimo in direct sunlight.
