Spills were kept on the fireplace mantle to hold slivers of wood or twisted paper used to transfer flame from the fireplace to oil lamps, candles, cigars, pies, etc. Impure flint (lead) was used in making the glass, which can be seen as a green glow now using a blacklight. Flint went off to the Civil War, giving way to simple pressed glass after. Pure leaded glass was developed later that century which does not glow green under a blacklight. Absent a blacklight, another way to confirm flint glass is by tapping on the rim with a fingernail which will produce a bell like sound. Ordinary pressed glass will only give a “thud.” This piece was alternatively used to hold celery on a formal table.
