The Central of Georgia passenger depot and shed began construction began just before the outbreak of the Civil War. The shed was completed in 1861, but the depot lingered on until 1876. The passenger depot is built of brick, along classical lines, with well proportioned, arched window and door openings. The shed boasts some highly unusual and rare features. It was designed by Augustus Schwaab, a German immigrant engineer. He incorporated some details that were typical of German construction of the time, but not used in the USA. Most notably the trusses of the shed use a combination of wood timbers, wrought iron bars and circular, cast iron connectors. This is detailed clearly in the 5th sheet of this drawing set. This train shed is one of the oldest surviving examples of iron roof construction anywhere in the USA. As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. They provide a vivid glimpse of a piece of railroad history. The excellent drawings prepared by the architects and engineers of the Historic American Building Survey provide dimensions and details of key elements of this historic building.
