Rodilla Cajon Introducing a new variation of the Cajon box drum, the Rodilla Cajon. The Rodilla, or “knee” box drum, is a more compact design than the floor cajon making it easier to carry and play. Unlike the bulky standard Cajon which is played resting on the floor, the Rodilla is played while standing or sitting. In the sitting position, the strap is placed around the waist and the Rodilla is held between the knees. In this position, the player’s arms and hands are in a more natural position much like typing at a keyboard. In the standing position, the strap is hung over the shoulder or neck, so the Rodilla hangs in front or to one’s side. As a percussion instrument, the Rodilla is easy to play, and requires no lessons. If you can keep time to music, you can play the Rodilla. The playing face, called the Tapa, is tapped with the fingertips of each hand and can create a variety of sounds. It’s that simple! Put on some music with a nice beat and tap away. There is no right or wrong way to play since you are creating a percussion sound to augment the music. Just keep the beat. After a short while playing, you’ll learn to produce various tones using different style finger taps and specific places to tap on the Tapa, and muscle memory will take effect. At this stage, you can tailor these sounds to accompany and harmonize with music and vocals. My Rodilla Cajons are professional grade. I personally hand craft each instrument from the finest domestic and exotic woods, like African Zebra and Bubinga wood, Birch, and Walnut. The Tapa and rear panels are made using AAA Finnish Birch plywood, the finest, most expensive plywood in the world. Finnish Birch plywood has no voids and is made using many very thin layers of void less Finnish Birch. This wood produces clean, crisp tones which are unmatched by any other wood. Because the Tapa is made of such strong yet thin wood, it can produce a variety of different sounds depending on how and where struck. Each instrument is hand varnished with numerous coats, and hand rubbed to produce a beautiful, deep grain enhancing finish. The instrument’s sound hole is located on the bottom to best broadcast sounds towards your audience. A snare board is included to add an interesting snare drum sound. Because the snare is placed at the bottom of the Tapa and elevated, it can be tapped while in its raised position or quickly slid down onto the Tapa for snare sounds. In spite of the Rodilla Cajon's compact size, their design and construction combine to produce rich and varied tones which easily rival those produced by even the best floor cajons. Construction Details:The Rodilla is 12 inches square and 4 inches thick. The Finnish Birch Tapa is 2.5 mm (3/32") thick by 5 plies. The rear panel is 6 mm (1/4") by 13 plies. The side panels are 3/4" solid exotic and/or domestic hardwoods. I typically use African Bubinga, Zebra wood, American Walnut, and American Birch. Side panels are finger jointed together. The snare board is 1/8" white oak with 20 strand snare wires which together produce a great effect. Included is a quick release strap which is used around one's waist or over the shoulder or neck. At the base of the rear panel adjacent to the sound hole is a standard 1/4 x 20 female threaded insert for attaching a cajon mic as desired. The bottom has small feet to enable you to rest the instrument on the floor without scratching its finish. Whether you want to play solo, in a band, or just jamming with others, the Rodilla is fun, easy to play, and compact to transport.
