Solstice MLTL Reference Tower Speaker Kit Parts Express is proud to introduce the Solstice, a reference quality 2‑way speaker kit designed exclusively for us by Jeff Bagby. The Solstice kit is a no compromise speaker using all Morel drivers in a MMT tower configuration. The TiCW 638Nd woofers, from Morel's Titanium series, feature some of the most advanced designs on the market with a 3" Hexatech™ voice coil on a titanium former, Hybrid™ neodymium/ferrite motor, and Uniflow™ aluminum frame. A CAT 308 tweeter, an updated version of Morel's classic MDT‑30, handles the top octaves delivering an extremely dynamic and natural sound. The solid MDF enclosure panels are all CNC milled to tight tolerances ensuring easy assembly. The finished cabinet has extensive bracing, double thick front baffle, and a rear firing slot port creating a very solid enclosure tuned to extend low frequency response down to 30 Hz. Measuring at 38" tall the enclosure places the tweeter near optimum listening height, making this a small floor standing speaker with no need for speaker stands. The tweeter is so smooth that it is very simple to cross over, and I really like the motor design and cone on these woofers. Veneered them with some quilted bubinga from Veneer Supplies. Took about 50 hours to complete. Make sure you are gluing the right side for the front facing MDF as it has an angled baffle and then have a panic attack and spend 3 extra hours removing it with a razor blade and hammer and re-sanding. Don't be like me! Also I'm aware that I need acoustical treatment and a bigger space for them to breathe… but the girlfriend is an architect/interior designer and won't allow it… it was enough to convince her to let me build these. Incredibly well balanced across the frequency spectrum, nothing stands out. Just crystal clear resolution and adequate, tight bass. For people who know what true flat frequency response sounds like, they can appreciate the quality of these speakers. I was initially skeptical at these speakers, considering I've built several other commercial kits, but once I powered these up, my skepticism quickly vanished. These may seem "expensive", but honestly you cannot find any speakers of this quality for anywhere near this price, as long as you're willing and able to put in some effort in building them. Like many others, I used to have a "wish list" of speakers that I wanted to research and perhaps audition. Not any more. As can be seen from the pictures, I finished mine in figured maple and textured copper paint. I hope I did them justice. These will be a permanent fixture in my stereo system for a long, long time.
