The Stein Hub Axle Vise is the latest version of a great tool that is used to preload the bearings of a quick release bicycle hub so that the adjustment of the bearings will compensate for the compression of the axle assembly when subjected to the tension applied by the quick release skewer when locked in the frame. The hub, either laced into a wheel or alone, is placed into the Hub Axle Vise which is clamped into a bench vise. Then the skewer is installed through a special washer (included) and then through the hub and finally threaded into the tool. The quick release cam is locked down and the hub bearings are adjusted normally. When the skewer is loosened, the correct amount of "play" can be noted as the difference of the loaded and unloaded condition. The tool was originally developed to provide John Barnett with a tool for instructing his students at the Barnett Bicycle Institute with a tool for this purpose. The original design was reworked to make using the tool easier by having the threads in the tool for the skewer to be installed from the top as advised by Aaron Gross. This makes the installation much simpler, but the effect is the same.
