THE ARMED FORCES OFFICER--This is a 265-page softcover book compiled by the US Department of Defense and published by the US Government Printing Office in 1965 as Department of Defense Pamphlet (Pam) 1-20 and Department of the Army Pamphlet No. 600-2..This officers training guide was in use during most of the Vietnam conflict and was the first paperback edition. The binding is fascinating and rudimentary - staples covered with a pasted-on cover and spine. Though basic, it is secure. Covers all facets of how to be an effective leader, from military doctrine and leadership acumen to tactical considerations.. (See Table of Contents photo.) The most inspiring section is Chapter 26, which lays out the essential principles of American military leadership which have been in place as far back as the Revolutionary war and through Pork Chop Hill (Korea). Examples are Principle I: "When led with courage and intelligence, an American will fight as willingly and as efficiently as any fighter in world history." and Principle VII espouses "Except on a Hollywood lot, there is no "Fighter Type." Our best men (sic) com in all colors, shapes, and sizes..." There are 7 pages of single spaced references, providing a rich resource for studying the mid-century approach to psychology, warfare, authority, military tactics and history, etc. Vintage condition. The cover is faded and scuffed at the edges, but intact and secure. The pages are yellowed but not torn, creased, or marked. Inside back cover has some discoloration at the inside spine.
