A Moralized Bible is a type of manuscript biblical illuminated dating from the end of the Middle Ages (xiiie At xvie centuries) which consists of repeating verses from the bible in latin, accompanied by comments promulgating moral lessons and systematically associated with miniatures illustrating these extracts. These manuscripts are also sometimes called story bible,allegorized bible, Or Biblical emblems. The largest Bibles contain up to 5 000 thumbnails. There Moralized Bible said of Vienna is a moralized bible illuminated dating from the first half of xiiie century kept at the Austrian National Library under the symbol Cod.2554. Entirely written in French, it was produced for a sponsor of the royal family of France. It should not be confused with aanother moralized bible preserved by the same library under the symbol 1179. According to English art historian John Lowden, the manuscript was made for the Queen of France Blanche of Castile, but this hypothesis remains debated, probably in Paris. It would date from the years 1215-1230 or the years 1225-1249. For several historians (including Lowden), it would be the manuscript of the moralized bible the oldest still extant, unless the 1179 Vienna manuscript predates it by a few years (according to Guest).In the middle of XVIe century, the manuscript probably belongs to a Lorraine family : several coats of arms from this region represented on a folio recall it. In 1783, the manuscript was acquired by the Royal Library of Vienna with the rest of the fund of a convent.
