As a 20-year old hand launch glider modeler Pop remembers that he was really struck by this cover art showing the typical setup for catapulting an all balsa glider on its next flight. That was 64 years ago and he searched all these years to find out what model that could be. “It certainly was much larger than my trusty Jasco THERMIC 30s.” Unexpectedly, a customer in England sent a plan of a once popular catapult glider from 1946 that had a three foot wing span. The finished model would look exactly like the model in the old magazine cover's art work. The plan was a miniature and the full-size wing airfoil pattern shown was way out of size when the plan was enlarged. So, Pop enlarged it to a 34" span, 4" chord catapult glider, and added correct full-size patterns for the airfoil and plywood dihedral braces to be inserted in the wing at dihedral breaks. Then he wrote many building & flying notes on the PLAN from his past experiences with hand launch and catapult gliders. SIG Mfg. still sells sheets with a pre-carved airfoil shape which is perfect for scratch builders. I show pictures of the 34" span glider plan with Pop’s old THERMIC 30 and a yardstick over them to point out that this is indeed just about the largest catapult balsa glider PLAN you'll find. AN ADDITIONAL PLAN OFFERED HERE IS CALLED THE “TUFURWUN". It is a nice plan from 1956 by Paul Del Gatto of an all balsa, 32" span catapult glider that also shows how to install an .049 Wasp gas engine to the nose. I include a copy of the original construction article from 1956. As a BONUS I also include a copy of a great vintage article on how to fly catapult gliders.
