Check the listing for details. Utica 3-Diamond Short Chain Nose Plier Probably No. 22. Condition: Used. Listed at 25.00 USD. We’re not experts about old tools, but we spend time seeking information about tools we offer for sale. Utica is a company whose tools we like. It is usually relatively easy to narrow date of production of Utica tools — not with this one. The only stampings on the Plier is the well-known Utica 3-Diamonds across the pivot and “UTICA”and “NY” in arcs above and below it (see images). Including “NY” places production pre-1960s when the company relocated away from Utica NY. There is no Model Number which suggests early 20th Century production. The Smooth, Plain Handle might mean post 1940s or pre-1920s. (see images) In the 1950s No.22 were offered with “Scored Only” in 6 Inch Size (https://archive.org/details/utica-tools-catalog-66/Utica%20Tools%20Catalog%2066/page/n5/mode/2up). In the 1960s Utica offered 6 Inch, No. 22 Pliers with Standard “Scored” Jaws and non-standard “Smooth” Jaws (https://archive.org/details/UticaToolsCatalog67/Utica%20Tools%20Catalog%2067/page/n7/mode/2up). Nowhere, through the years of Utica catalogs, does it explain (or offer) the 3/8 Inch Notch on one of the Jaws (see images). The Plier is in good condition. The Pivot is secure and smooth with just enough friction to offer movement feedback. The Jaws meet properly and grip securely. As expected, Utica produced a fine tool that will last longer than its users. It can be put to work upon receipt or added to a Show-and-Tell Collection of mid-20th Century tools — our best guess. We will ship the Utica Short Nose by USPS Ground Advantage on the next regular business day following receipt of payment.
