The 17th Aviation Group was activated in Vietnam in December 1965 and became operational March 1, 1966. It assumed command of the 10th, 14th and 52nd battalions in March 1966 and became part of 1st Aviation Brigade in May 1966. The group was located at Nha Trang until November 1970 when it moved to Tuy Hoa. II Corps terrain varied from coastal plains to mountains (Central Highlands). The 17th CAG had about 8,000 personnel. Late in the war, in 1972 the group provided intensive support to ARVN troops defending a major incursion by NVA tanks.
