Due to the intensive gas industry between the coking plants and blast furnaces supplying blast furnace gas, GBAG also held a 26 percent stake in Ruhrgas AG, which was founded in 1926. In 1940, a subsidiary Gelsenberg Benzin issued shares with the following purpose and ownership: "Production of coal-based fuels." Founded on December 18, 1936; registered on December 24, 1936; all shares held by the founders: Vereinigte Stahlwerke AG, Düsseldorf; Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks-AG, Essen; August-Thyssen-Hütte AG, Duisburg-Hamborn; Bochumer Verein für Gußstahlfabrikation AG, Bochum; Dortmund-Hoerder Hüttenverein-AG, Dortmund. This plant found a successor after the war, now using petrol from crude oil, at the former VEBA, then E.ON. Although GBAG was badly hit during the Second World War, like many other large German companies it employed forced laborers. For this purpose, the Gelsenberg camp was maintained on the premises of Gelsenberg Benzin AG as a satellite camp of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.
