I am an electrical engineer and my family owns four of these radios. I own a desoldering station and a microscope and have successfully modified many of these radios for MARS / CAP operation. Note that I selected a "handling time" of 15 days. I usually turn these around in a couple of days (unless I'm on vacation), but because eBay will be rating ME based on how long this takes from the time YOU purchase, ship to me, and I ship back to you, I have to account for people who are slow to ship me their radio. Hence, I put a lot of padding into the handling time. Original frequency range: 144-148MHZ, 430-450MHZ New frequency range: 137-174MHZ, 420-470MHZ MARS is the Military Auxiliary Radio Service and is used on bands near the ham HF and VHF frequencies to forward personal messages to/from military personnel. CAP is Civil Air Patrol. This organization is part youth group and part domestic search and rescue auxiliary for the Air Force. They also use frequencies near the ham bands and they use ham volunteers to coordinate search activities and relay messages. This MARS / CAP modification is for those authorized with one or the other organization (or both), and the frequencies are for official use only. Use of any Amateur Radio product outside of the Amateur band is at the users own risk, and no guarantee of compliance with specifications outside the Amateur bands is expressed or implied. Yaesu's Limited Warranty does not cover damage caused by any attempt to modify an apparatus for out-of-Amateur-band operation, nor does Yaesu's Limited Warranty cover damage to components that may result from out-of-Amateur-band use. That said, people have sent their in-warranty MARS/CAP modified radio to Yaesu for repairs, and repairs have been performed with no questions asked (in fact, I have done this once successfully when I shorted the transorb). This does not mean Yaesu won't change their policy in the future.
