Measuring Depth NOTE — This is a comparator gauge and not a direct reading gauge. It must be used in conjunction with a micrometer, caliper, or setting ring. The dial does not show the absolute distance between the contact points, but rather, a relative reading in relation to whereever you 0 set the gauge. For example, if you zero set the gauge to 4” using a setting ring / micrometer / caliper, then the gauge will show the deviation from 4” when it is used on the test piece. Caliper is spring loaded and makes point contact measuring pressure.
