Fifteenth-century English Falchion Fifteenth-century English Falchion English Falchion of Infantry of the late fifteenth century. The original has been in the Royal Armouries Collection since before 1916 and its exact origin is unknown, although it is part of a group of similar English swords. These short swords were very popular hand weapons for bilmans and archers during the Wars of the Roses and early Tudor Period. Thousands of swords like this would have gone into action in battles such as Towton, Barnet, Tewkesbury and Bosworth. This design features a complex single-edged blade emptied and channeled to make it lighter. It has an elegant fine but strong tip capable of facing the rigors of the fight against enemies armed with chain mail or plates. This replica is forged by hand by an expert spanger with 1080 high carbon steel, which is fully tempered with a distal narrowing for a correct weight distribution. The scabbard is made with wooden body and covered with leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass contera. In the mouth of the sheath, the leather extends upwards and covers part of the guard. For its care and maintenance, Windlass Classic Wax and polishing cloth are included. Manufactured by Windlass Steelcrafts. The original can be seen in the Royal Armouries Collection, Number IX.144.
