Halloween characters have been a favorite seasonal issue. Coming out only in the fall, they have undergone many changes. Witches, Jack O' Lanterns and Skulls have been popular themes. In 1998, the Glowing Ghosts were introduced to the mix: Happy Henry, Naughty Nell, Slimy Sid, and Polly Pumkin (technically not a ghost). The series actually consists of a "glowing" variety, a non-glowing variety, and a crystal variety. 2001 saw the addition of a GITD Skull, 2002 saw a GITD Witch. In 2003, Slovenia was the first to retool for the 5.9 patent, so the GITD Slimy Sid (which was made in Slovenia) has both a 4.9 and a 5.9 stem. Happy Henry had a Hungary stem and switched from 4.9 to 5.9 in 2003. The Jack O' Lantern Pumpkin was first issued in Austria in 1981 and had a die-cut face. Thin feet were added in 1987. In 1990, A newly designed Jack O' Lantern Pumpkin came out (small head) in Hungary. The 4.9 patent came out in 1990 but too late for pumpkins that year, so for one year there was a 3.9 stem for the new head. In 1998, the Jack O' Lantern was redesigned with a much larger head. The new head design was really for Polly Pumpkin (one of the Glowing Ghosts series of that year). There were also three crystal versions in 1998. A glowing stem variety came out in 2002. The Pumpkin was redesigned again in 2004. The Green Face Witch is the longest running PEZ issue. In 1991, the fourth witch design (actually third re-design) came out in Yugoslavia. In 1993 Yugoslavia changed it's name to Slovenia. That helps to date these issues. In 2002, they issued a Glow in the Dark version to accompany the regular version. In 2003, Slovenia was the first to retool for the 5.9 patent, so the GITD witch has both a 4.9 and a 5.9 stem. In 2005 the Witch was completely redesigned and put on a 4.9 Hungary GITD stem. In 2006, the Witch was changed to 5.9 Slovenia, then to 5.9 China stems. The Witch was redesigned again in 2011. Dr. Skull was an early favorite when it came out in Austria in 1972 on a 3.4 stem. Slightly changed Skulls began in 1975 under the new 3.8 patent (Orange stem). The 3.9 patent came out early in 1976 and saw another minute adjustment (dark purple stem). Thin feet were added in 1987 and the head became slightly larger. In 1989, the Skulls were switched to Yugoslavia. The 4.9 patent came out in 1990 but too late for Dr Skulls that year, so a second year with the 3.9 Yugoslavia stem was issued. In 1991 a new, even larger head came out on the 4.9 stem. In 1993 Yugoslavia changed it's name to Slovenia. In 1998, the Diablo version (black head) of Dr Skull came out. 2001 saw the glow in the dark version. By 2004, Dr Skull had been retired for a new skeleton character (Toti). In 2005, The GITD Mummy with GITD stem was added to the set. In 2006, the Mummy was not included in the set but replaced by a Black Cat with GITD stem and the glowing ghosts reappeared with 5.9 stems. The Black Cat was on a 5.9 Hungary stem in 2006 but changed to 5.9 China stem in 2007 before being retired. A Bat with GITD stem was issued in 2009. A GITD Vampire came out in 2010. An ugly witch was issued in 2011. A new Halloween Pumpkin was introduced in 2012 on a White Stem. Later, it was also issued on a green stem. A whimsical Ghost appeared in 2013. In 2016, another new Witch was introduced and the stem color of the Halloween Pumpkin changed the shade of green. Some characters may not be currently available.
