Sword of Sir Francis Drake Sword of Sir Francis Drake Sir Francis Drake was a famous 16th-century English sailor and privateer, slave trader explorer, politician and vice admiral of the Royal Navy. He led numerous naval expeditions against Spanish interests in Spain itself and in the Indies, being the second person to circumnavigate the world in a single expedition, after Elcano, and participating in the attack on Cadiz in 1587, the defeat of the Great and Felicísima Armada and the failed attack on La Coruna in 1589. Sir Francis Drake was born in the cove of a ship and was orphaned within a few years, being picked up by the skipper of a ship. He soon acquired the dominance of the sea and its dangers, dedicating himself to the risky overseas trade. In a match he was defeated by the Spaniards, after which he swore revenge and dedicated his life to it by attacking and looting Spanish ships and goods from the New World. He was and remains a controversial figure. At a time when England and Spain were confronted militarily, he was regarded as a pirate by the Spanish authorities, while in England he was valued as a privateer and honored as a hero, being knighted by Queen Elizabeth I in reward for his services to the English crown. Sir Francis Drake was a hero in England, but pirate to the Spaniards who called him «The Draque». He was the second commander of the English fleet in the fight against the Spanish Navy in 1588. In 1595 he undertook a final trip to the West Indies on the queens command, but this expedition against the Spaniards proved a failure and Sir Francis Drake died in the Caribbean as a result of dysentery.
